The Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Division (TSMD) of the Institute, popularly known as the Stat-Math Division, traces its roots to the erstwhile Research and Training School (RTS) in ISI Kolkata, and was formally established in 1975. It is the oldest and the largest academic division of the Institute.
Subsequently, when ISI centres were established in Delhi and Bangalore, Stat-Math units were added also in these locations. Currently, the Division has three units in Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangalore.
The Division invites applications for positions of Assistant Professor in its three units in the following areas:
Algebra and Number theory, Complex Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Geometry, PDE, Probability, Statistics
from exceptionally bright and motivated Indian citizens with an established record of high-quality research and a strong commitment to teaching. Recruitments in higher positions (Associate Professor and above) may also be made depending on the experience and suitability of the candidate, and the requirements of the division. However, applications from outstanding candidates in any area of Mathematics aligned with the research interest of the division would also be welcome.

A conference on Probability & Stochastic Processes in honour of Professor Rajeeva L. Karandikar will be held online from March 28 -- 31, 2022. It will be hosted by Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Delhi. The organizers are Abhay G. Bhatt, B. V. Rao and Siva Athreya.
The 42nd International Conference on Quantum Probability and Infinite Dimensional Analysis will be held in ISI Bangalore from January 17-20, 2022.

Siva Athreya, Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Bangalore has been elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi, effective from January 01, 2022.
Ritabrata Munshi, Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Kolkata has received the prestigious J. C. Bose Fellowship for the next five years from SERB, DST, GoI.
Debashish Goswami, Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Kolkata has had his J. C. Bose Fellowship extended for another five years.
